Carl Littlefield
Years at Sac City: 1935-36
Sport: Football / Rugby
Induction Year: 2013

A graduate of Sutter Creek (now Amador) High School, Carl Littlefield competed for Sacramento Junior College from 1934 to 1936.  As a freshman, he was the first winner of the Fortado award, which was presented to the best SJC all-around athlete.  During his freshman year, he competed on the school’s first rugby team, as well as on the track and field team.  It was in the sport of football, however, where Littlefield made his biggest impact.  He started at fullback and was the team’s punter as well.  As a sophomore, Littlefield was voted to the all-conference team after being a team captain and being voted “most inspirational” by his teammates.  He transferred to Washington State, where he started at fullback for two seasons, before going undrafted in the 1940 NFL draft.  After competing in the 1940 College East-West All-Star Game in San Francisco, he was offered contracts with the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions.  Instead, he signed with the Cleveland Rams, where he played one season and scored his only NFL touchdown on a fumble return.  He played two seasons at fullback with the Pittsburgh Steelers (then called the Pirates) and one with the AFL’s Buffalo Indians, for whom he also kicked field goals.  Carl Littlefield died in 1988.
