Wrestling has a great turnout for their 39th Annual Alumni Match (scrimmage)

The 39th Annual Sacramento City College Alumni Wrestling Scrimmage took place on Saturday, Sept. 1st and it was a great success. 22 Alumni wrestled in the meet, and at last count, 53 alumni attended the meet. The oldest competition was Phil Scott who last wrestled for SCC in 1984 and is 53 years, 11 months old. The wrestler who traveled the furthest was Daniel Larman, who has been living in Poland for about a year and a half. Daymond Bland and Phil Scott shared the honor of being in the 8th alumni meet of their careers, the most of any Alumni. There also were 10 first time alumni competing this year. There were at least 53 total alumni in attendance to support those wrestling. The crowd filled the gym and one of the top people there to support these young men was SCC President, Michael Gutierrez. We appreciate very much that he took time out of his busy schedule to support our program for the second straight year.

As we know, this is a scrimmage and official scores are not kept, but the alumni, who normally have an advantage, once again had the upper edge in the meet. There were some great match-ups and the alumni brought in a lot of decorated wrestlers. The alumni had wrestlers who totaled 16 medals while wrestling for SCC. Many of these alumni went on to 4 years schools to wrestle or to just get their next degree. Schools represented were: Univ. of Oregon, San Francisco State, Missouri Baptist, Wayland Baptist (TX), Idaho State, Cal Berkeley, Chadron State (NE), Chico State, York College (NE), Hastings College (NE), Univ. of Tennessee Chattanooga, North Dakota State, CSU Sacramento and Dickinson State Univ. (ND). We had one D2 All American and 2 NAIA All Americans. Eight of the Alumni were Academic All American and 3 others were on the BIG 8 Conference Academic team.

The meet was run on 2 mats. It was officiated by Cory Salmon and Pablo Ortiz. There were a number of scrimmages that were very tough competitions. On mat 1, Jordan Denny, Ryan Harlow, Eddie Zamora, and Isaac Sillas were the best current team members facing the alumni. On mat 2, SCC was powered by Ryun Ortiz, Hunter Larue, Bronson Harmon, and Steven Abbott did the most damage for SCC. Harmon and Abbott knocked of former SCC state finalists. In another match, current Panther Devon Silva finished in a tie with alumni Morgan Silva. Devon and Morgan were HS teammates at Chico and both came to SCC in 2016. Devon sat out last year while Sauseda took 2nd in State. It was a very entertaining match. Some very close matches that opened some eyes even though some current Panthers were outscore were: Manny Curry losing by 1 to Daniel Larman who was both an All American and Academic All American. Conrad Trevino losing by 1 to current NAIA All American, Chris Vaughan. In one of the best match ups of the night, Abel Garcia lost by 1 to former State Champion and Academic All American, Dylan Forzani. Abel was 2nd in State last season and was also an Academic All American!

Looking to this week, SCC will go to the Bakersfield Duals where they are scheduled to meet Cerritos, Bakersfield, Victor Valley and Moorpark in dual matches. The Panthers finished 3rd in State last year while Cerritos finished 4th and Bakersfield finished 6th. These will be some great match-ups. Victor Valley will be in good hands with new coach, Rocky Humphries and the Moorpark team is in its 2nd year after restarting the program last year. The meet will be on Saturday and start at 9:00 AM.
