Wrestling finishes 3rd at the Meathead Movers Tournament at Cuesta
Sac City traveled to Cuesta College for the Meathead Movers Tournament.  #1 Fresno City once again won the tourney and #3 Mt. San Antonio took second place. SCC, ranked #4 in the state took third while State #2 Cerritos finished in fourth place.  The 2nd to 5th place teams were only separated by 12 points, very tight and making for exciting matches throughout the competition.

SCC was led by two 184 pounders, Bronson Harmon (FR-Oakdale HS) and Steven Abbott (Soph-Orland HS).  Harmon entered as the #2 seed and Abbott the #4 seed.  Both went undefeated to make it to the finals, but they did not wrestle each other in the final match. Basically they tied for 1st.  Both finished 3-0 on the day.  Abbott had a fall in his first match, then beat #5 seed Jerrin Dean of Fresno. It is the 4th win of the year for Abbott over Dean. In the semi's, Abbott met the #1 seed, Jeremy Mass of Bakersfield.  After falling behind 2-0, Abbott started scoring points often. In the end, he won 12-7 to reach the finals.  Harmon went a similar route.  He scored a fall in his first match, then beat #7 seed Hunter Gonzales of Sierra.  In the semi, he ground out a 9-4 win over the #3 seed, Nicholas Kimball of Palomar to also reach the finals.

Four other Panther wrestlers wrestled for 3rd place and three were successful in winning their match.  Mikey Mello (FR-141-Oak Ridge HS), Conrad Trevino (FR-157-Del Campo HS), Abel Garcia (Soph-165-Oakdale HS) and Brian Horn (Soph-197-Rocklin HS) all competed for the bronze.

Mello, the #7 seed got a fall in his first match. His next match was #2 Josh Fuentes of Santa Ana.  In a barn burner of a match, Mello came out on top, 12-8. In the semi's, he met #3 seed Nick Camacho of Cerritos. These two battled to a tie. After one overtime, it was still tied. In the second overtime, Camacho scored a 2 point reversal right before the buzzer to win 5-4. Mello came back to face #5 seed Luis Ramos of Fresno. Mello lost to Ramos last week at the North Duals. In a very tight match, Mello scored a late takedown and held on to a 4-3 win. That put him in the 3rd place match against #4 seed Eric Reyes of Palomar. Mello kept his point scoring strong and took third place with a 13-6 win.

Trevino went in as the #6 seed.  He too started off with a fall in his first match.  In his quarter final match he fell behind #3 seed Joe Romero of West Hills, 6-0.  He kept battling back and with about 10 seconds to go he tied it 6-6. With only a few seconds left, Romero got an escape for a 7-6 win.  Trevino then rattled off 4 straight wins to get the bronze medal.  He got a fall, then knocked off #7 seed Zach Poore of Fresno. Poore defeated Trevino twice in the first tournament of the season, but Trevino has now bounced back with two straight wins over Poore.  In the conso-semi's, Trevino met #4 seed Jesse Diaz of Palomar. He scored an early takedown and finished off with a fall to go for third place.  He met #8 seed Miguel Gallardo and pulled out a 7-6 victory for the bronze.

Garcia, in his first tournament at 165 pounds, went in as the #2 seed.  He scored two falls to get to the semi. He lost to #3 seed Mace Anderson of Palomar by a 3-1 score.  He bounced back with a 8-4 win over Zepeda of East LA and then a 6-2 win over Cox of Palomar for the bronze.

Horn came in as the #4 seed.  He beat #5 Stenschke of Cuesta for his second win and move to the semi. He lost to Cress of Chabot, the #1 ranked wrestler in the state.  In the conso-semi, he pinned Singh of Delta in the second round. For the bronze, he met Stenschke again, but fell this time, 10-5 to finish in fourth place.

Many other Panther wrestlers got in the win column. Ryun Ortiz (Soph-125-Potomic HS, VA) went 3-2 on the day with a fall. He lost to the #3 and #8 seeds.  At 141, three Panthers got some wins.  Brian Galeno (FR-Valley HS) went 1-2; Austin Valencia (FR-Woodcreek HS) went 1-2 and Thomas Thornton (Soph-Yuba City HS) went 2-2 on the day.
