The Panthers are the State Runner-Ups in Wrestling; Harmon won the 184 lb. Individual State Championship

Sacramento City College went to Cerritos College for the CCCAA State Championship and came back with a lot of individual medals and a 2nd Place Team trophy. Top ranked Fresno City College kept the engine rolling with their 3rd straight Championship.

The real battle was the 2nd place spot as 4 teams were in the hunt. #2 ranked Cerritos finished in 4th, #3 ranked Mt. San Antonio finished 5th and #5 Palomar snuck into 3rd behind the 4th ranked Panthers 2nd place finish.

SCC took 11 wrestlers and 9 of them finished in the top 7 in state. Five of these wrestlers finished in the top 4 and earned All American honors.

Leading the way for SCC was Bronson Harmon (FR-184-Oakdale HS). Bronson Harmon won the North Region one week earlier, knocking off the top ranked wrestler in the state, Jhaylyn Hall of Santa Rosa. He would meet Hall in the State finals as well. Along the way, he had a bye, then he knocked off Victor Cruz of Modesto by decision and #3 ranked Tevin Bailey of Lassen by a Major Decision. For the second straight week, Bronson Harmon defeated Hall 3-2. In the region, it was a takedown late in the third period for the 3-2 win. At the state, he scored a takedown 41 seconds into the first round to get another 3-2 win and a State Championship. Bronson Harmon became the 26th State Champion in SCC history.

Also making the finals was Brian Horn (Soph-197-Rocklin HS). Brian Horn finished 2nd at the region to qualify, losing to #1 Anthony Cress of Chabot. He would once again meet Cress in the state final. Before that match, Brian Horn also started with a bye. He then beat Tony Rogers of Lassen, #4 ranked in his first match by decision, then knocked off #5 Matt Martinez of Fresno by Injury Default. Brian Horn led by 10 before the default occurred. In the final, he once again met Cress who won a 6-3 decision, and Brian Horn finished in 2nd place. Last year Brian Horn finished in 8th place at 165 pounds.

#4 ranked Steven Abbott (Soph-184-Orland HS) had a great meet. After finishing 4th in the North Region, where the top 4 wrestlers in the state are located, Abbott found an extra gear and finished in 3rd place. Steven Abbott started the tournament off with two falls in the first round. The second fall was over South #1 Nick Kimball of Palomar. He lost a tough 8-6 match to previous #1 ranked Hall of Santa Rosa. Without skipping a beat, Steven Abbott came back with two more 1st period falls including one over #3 ranked Tevin Bailey of Lassen. Bailey had won the two previous meetings including the match for 3rd at Region. With the 4 falls, Steven Abbott tied a state meet record of 4 falls. Former SCC wrestler Tyler Diamond is one of the others who hold that title. Also, Steven Abbott won the Manuel Gorrarian Award - Most Falls Least Accumulative Time. Steven Abbott finished with 22 falls on the year. This puts him in 4th place in the SCC History books for falls.

Two Panthers took home 4th place medals. Michael Mello (FR-141-Oak Ridge HS) and Abel Garcia (Soph-165-Oakdale HS) both brought home 4th place medals. Michael Mello had finished 4th at the region, and 2 of the 3 wrestlers from the north finished ahead of him again. Michael Mello started off with a bust as he was caught on his own back in the first period for a fall. He had to work hard to get into medal contention. After the loss, he defeated Nick Camacho of Cerritos, who he had lost to earlier in the year. It was a big win for SCC and knocked Cerritos a notch down in the team race. After a win by medical forfeit, he held on to a 11-10 win over south #2 Eric Reyes of Palomar. He lost to Ezra Clark of Skyline in the match for 3rd place. Clark also defeated Michael Mello in the region 3rd place match last week.

Abel Garcia had his toughest tournament in the two years at SCC. A 2nd place State medalist last year at 174, the move to 165 this year was not what we expected. After finishing in 2nd place at the region, Abel Garcia had a first round bye at the state. He scored a fall against Devin Top of Moorpark but got caught early by state #1 Mace Anderson of Palomar and lost by fall. He bounced back with a tech fall, only to get caught again in a match that was 1-1 at the time, and was pinned in the 3rd period to finish in 4th. Abel Garcia led the team in takedowns on the year as well as wins with 37 wins, 17 by fall. The wins ties him for 5th most in a season at SCC. Also in that tie is Head Coach David Pacheco from his 1977 season.

Bringing home 5th place was Isaac Bertolotto (Soph-174-Turlock HS). Isaac Bertolotto won his first match by decision. He then lost to #5 ranked Cameron Cox of Palomar. He bounced back with a major decision and a decision to make it to the conso semi match. A loss there put him in the match for 5th place where he defeated Flores of Moorpark by a 9-3 score. Flores is also the opponent Isaac Bertolotto defeated in the first match. Isaac Bertolotto also took 5th place last year, but at 165 pounds.

Dylan Crawford (Soph-149-Lodi HS) and Conrad Trevino (FR-157-Del Campo HS) both finished in 6th place. Dylan Crawford won a close first match to #6 ranked Emmett Kuntz of Bakersfield. He then faced #8 ranked Devin Daugherty of Cerritos to keep his tournament alive. Dylan Crawford got caught in a cradle early in the first period and fought for about a minute and a half to get free. He then scored an escape and a takedown to cut the deficit to 6-3. He kept the grind and finally took the lead and won 10-9. After a decision over Humphrey Quirie, an opponent he had lost to in the first tournament of the season, he lost to Modesto's Daniel Cota, 3-1. He then lost a tough 4-3 match to Aceves of Skyline to finish in 6th.

Conrad Trevino went in as the 3rd ranked wrestler, but it wasn't to be on this weekend. After a first round win by Major Decision, Conrad Trevino was pinned by eventual champion, Luis Vargas of Santa Ana. He then pinned Peterson of Chabot to set up a match with teammate, Manuel Curry. After scoring an early takedown, neither Panther could get much scoring going and Conrad Trevino went on to a 2-1 victory. He then lost two decisions to So-cal opponents and finished in 6th place.

The last medalist was Manuel Curry (FR-157-Pleasant Grove). Manuel Curry had a number of very close matches on the day. He won a 7-6 match over East LA to start, then lost a 3-2 match to state #2, Conrad Lopez of Fresno. Another decision over Chabot put him against teammate Conrad Trevino where Conrad Trevino prevailed. In the match for 7th place, Manuel Curry scored a 6-2 win over Jessy Diaz of Palomar.

Jordan Denny (Soph-285-Folsom) and Ryan Harlow (FR-133-Elk Grove) did not medal for the Panthers but did qualify to the meet.

This is the second time in team history that the Panthers have finished in 2nd place. The other time was in 2011. Over the past 11 years SCC has had the following finishes at state, starting with the most recent: 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 1st, 6th, 1st, 4th, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th

The Panthers won a record setting 8th BIG 8 Conference title in a row. They also won 17 duals on the season, setting a school record. Coach David Pacheco won his 300th and 301st Dual meets as a head coach as well. This puts him into the top 70 ALL TIME winningest wrestling coaches at ALL levels of college coaching.

The Panther Coaching staff was voted the Coaches of the year for the 8th straight year in the BIG 8 Conference.

In the next few months, we will hear more about scholarships our team will get to head to the university level, academic accolades and other awards and events the team will be involved with. Thanks for another outstanding season by the SCC wrestling team and their fans.
