Anthony Berkovatz named 2015 CCCAA MALE SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Anthony Berkovatz named 2015 CCCAA MALE SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

First of all, it is my great pleasure to announce that one of our former Football student athletes, Anthony Berkovatz, has been named the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) 2014-2015 Male Scholar Athlete of the year! Previously this past November Anthony Berkovatz was also named the 2015 Big 8 MALE SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR as well. As stated by CCCAA Executive Director Carlyle Carter, this "is the highest honor that the CCCAA wards to student athletes." There are approximately 26,000 student athletes that participate within the CCCAA and just one male and one female that are chosen as CCCAA Scholar Athletes of the year.

In addition to being a two-year starter and two-year captain for our FB team, Anthony completed two A.A. Degrees within Administrative Justice during his two years at SCC. Anthony was on the SCC Honor roll every semester he was enrolled at SCC and graduated with the Highest Honors from the College in the Spring of 2015.  Anthony completed his SCC career with a perfect 4.0 GPA. In his playing days at Sac City, Anthony was a standout defensive lineman who bypassed an offer to attend UC Davis on athletic-scholarship due to injury. Despite, his athletic career setback he continued his education at the 4-year level in order to pursue his passion for service: Anthony instead chose to enroll in the Police Academy.

It should be noted that this is the 2nd time in the last three years that a SCC student athlete has won the CCCAA scholar athlete of the year award, as former Panther Dan Sayles also won the award for the 2012-2013 year.

Anthony will have an award presented to him at the CCCAA Celebration of Student Athlete's Luncheon to be held during the annual CCCAA convention. The event will take place Wednesday, March 30, 2016, at the Doubletree Hilton in Ontario, CA.

Please join me in congratulating Anthony. In addition, please congratulate Head Football Coach Dannie Walker and his entire staff for this wonderful achievement. I would also like to congratulate Athletic Academic Counselor Victoria Cornelius for her great work with our student athletes, along with her determination in ensuring all of the application materials are completed!

Congratulations to All!
