Tanesha Sullins is awarded the 2019-20 SCC Female Scholar Athlete of the Year

Tanesha Sullins is awarded the 2019-20 SCC Female Scholar Athlete of the Year

Tanesha Sullins, like so many other spring student-athletes, saw her sophomore season come to an abrupt end a couple of months ago due to COVID-19.  However, she was able to compete in two meets before the season was canceled.  In the season opener she came in 1st place in both the 200m and 440m dash and in doing so set personal best marks in those two events with times of 26.68 and 1:00.21 respectively.

Sullins also competed in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays to start this year off and was looking to build on the success of her freshman campaign.  She was instrumental in the Panthers finishing in 2nd place at the Big 8 Conference and Nor-Cal Championships as both the 4x1 and 4x4 relay teams that she was a part of finished in 1st place at these meets.  Her relay teams finished in 4th (4x1) and 2nd (4x4) place at the State Championships and the Panthers finished in 5th place overall.  She will be attending William Jessup University in the fall and running track in the spring for the Warriors

Academically, Tanesha has been nothing short of amazing! Over her two plus years at Sacramento City College, she has posted a perfect 4.0 GPA while completing the demanding coursework for a Pre-Allied Health and Nursing major.

Tanesha is not only an exceptional student-athlete, but an exceptional person as a whole.

According to her head coach, Marisa Avendano . . . "On the field, Tanesha set a powerful example with both her work ethic, and her kindness and compassion. Tanesha is consistently kind, thoughtful, and encouraging, always willing to help in any way she can. She also displays an uncommon personal wisdom, frequently offering great advice to her teammates in the most compassionate and understanding way. Our team was a better team because of Tanesha. Our coaching staff was better because of Tanesha. Tanesha reminded us that we can always extend our hand to others in need even in the smallest of deeds."

In her spare time, Tanesha not only tutored her fellow student-athletes when asked, she also volunteered at Dignity Health Mercy General hospital.

In regards to her time at Sacramento City College, Tanesha stated the following . . . "If I can go through the workouts during track practice - cramping, tired, full of lactic acid - and still walk off the track ready to come back the next day, I can push myself in academics. I believe that my overall education at Sacramento City College has been a wonderful experience (as) I discovered many resources on campus that were helpful such as EOPS, RISE, Phi Theta Kappa, and many other programs. I have received help from my professors, the library, the math lab, the writing center, and tutors. This education has helped prepare me to complete my educational, athletic, and life goals successfully because I am equipped knowing that I am not alone in my journey. I realized that the faculty and staff aspire to see all students succeed in achieving their dreams. I have gained knowledge from the academic and athletic realm (and) am confident that Sacramento City College has supplied me with the tools necessary to move forward as I continue to strive to become a Nurse Practitioner. I am grateful for how these aspects intermingle (and) create strong Panthers."
