Dean Steve Hanson and the entire Sac City KHA department are thrilled to welcome Brian Chavez back to SCC, this time as the new head men's basketball coach. Chavez' roots at SCC go back to the 1999-2000 season when he served as a volunteer assistant coach with the SCC women's basketball team.
He joined the men's staff for the 2002-03 season and was fortunate to coach current SCC assistant coaches Victor Nance and B.J. Walden. Coach B spent six seasons with the Panthers' men's program, developing his skills and coaching philosophy, before starting a long and successful high school career in the greater Sacramento area.
Chavez' first stop was Galt HS, where he spent three seasons before being hired at Christian Brothers HS in Oak Park. His 8-year run with the Falcons included consecutive 20-win seasons, 5 playoff bids, a league championship, and a Nor-Cal quarterfinal finish in 2014.
In 2019-20 Chavez returned to Galt as the head coach at Liberty Ranch HS. His first team included senior point guard Jalen Patterson, who averaged 28.1 points, 6.3 assists and 6.6 rebounds and finished his career with 2,933 points (second most in section history). The team finished as the Sierra Valley Conference runner-up and won their first three playoff games to finish as the section runner-up. After the 2020-21 season was mostly lost to the Covid shutdown, Chavez's Hawks produced the best season in the school's history in 2021-22. They were led by future SCC star point guard Drew Fischer, and the team finished 29-6, enjoyed a 19-game win streak, and claimed league and section titles before falling in the Nor-Cal Finals.
Chavez, who earned a B.A. in Recreation Administration from Sacramento State and his M.S. in Sports Science from the United States Sports Academy, is excited about his homecoming after 16 seasons preparing for this opportunity.
